Ed Oliver Bicep Injury

Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver went down early Sunday while trying to wrap up a ball carrier. As he came off the field, he repeatedly checked his elbow and pointed at his bicep, and the training staff quickly ruled him out. The team has since confirmed a bicep tendon tear. He will undergo surgery and is out indefinitely.

There is some good news in the long-term outlook. Distal bicep tendon repairs have high success rates for athletes returning to their prior level of performance (Pagani N.R., Leibman M.I., Guss M.S. et al.). The tougher part is the timeline. A full recovery usually takes around six months.

Bills fans can look to linebacker Matt Milano for a bit of hope. Milano had a distal bicep repair just last preseason and made it back in 15 weeks. With the Super Bowl roughly 15 weeks away, a late-playoff return for Oliver isn’t off the table. It would require an aggressive rehab plan and everything going right, but there’s at least a pathway.

    1. Hello, if the confusion is how he can come back in 3 months when the recovery is 6 months? It is because 100% takes 6 months, but in rare cases, players’ can come back around 3 months with limited strength and high risk for re-injury
