Josh Allen Foot Surgery

Bills fans got an unexpected jolt on Thursday as Josh Allen arrived at the introductory press conference for new head coach Joe Brady wearing a walking boot and using crutches. While the organization largely downplayed the issue during the season, Josh Allen’s appearance immediately raised eyebrows across Buffalo. Allen has been managing the injury since December 21st, when it first surfaced during the Bills’ Week 16 matchup against the Browns.

Despite the setback, the franchise quarterback finished that game and suited up again the following week, showing little in the way of visible limitation during live action. With Buffalo resting key starters in Week 18, Allen effectively received a pseudo-bye heading into the postseason, yet still went on to start and play in two playoff games, making the sudden reveal all the more noteworthy.

As for the injury itself, it has now been reported that Allen suffered an avulsion fracture of the fifth metatarsal. Typical recovery timelines range from 8–10 weeks (Lareau et al.). Barring any setbacks, the injury should not impact his availability for OTAs, which typically begin in late May. The ThighDoctor nailed this over a week ago.

Because surgery was required, the procedure focused on stabilizing the injured area at the base of the fifth metatarsal. Through a small incision along the outside of the foot, surgeons realigned the avulsed piece of bone and secured it back into place using a small screw or anchor. This restores stability to the foot and allows the attached tendon to heal properly. The surgery is considered routine, has a high success rate, and is designed to protect long-term strength and mobility rather than limit it.

Bottom line: Josh Allen had the surgery, and everything points toward a full recovery. He’ll be back on his feet long before OTAs roll around, likely healed up even before he officially becomes a dad. Between modern sports medicine, a careful rehab plan, and let’s be honest, Hailee Steinfeld probably making sure those feet are rubbed back to full MVP form, Allen should be just fine. Bills Mafia can exhale, circle next season, and get ready, because obviously, the Bills are winning the Super Bowl next year.
